BUSINESS CARES: IMPACT STORIES
An Afternoon of Bingo with Summa Tech and The Jewish Association on Aging!
14 employees, families and friends of Summa Tech spent their Sunday afternoon on March 1, 2009, at the Jewish Association on Aging assisting the residents in playing bingo. The volunteers, the youngest of whom was 2 ½ years old, helped to bring the residents down to the recreation room to play bingo, pulled the bingo balls to be called, assisted individual residents in seeing their bingo boards and handed out bonus money that is good at the snack store at the JAA. One volunteer even played the bingo board for a resident taking a Sunday afternoon nap – the resident was surprised to wake up and find she had won bingo twice! Thank you to the volunteers from Summa Tech for spending the afternoon with the residents of the Jewish Association on Aging. Bingo was definitely a highlight of the week for them!
Family Volunteerism at Pressley Street High Rise
On Saturday, January 10, 2009, a group from Accenture volunteered at Pressley Street High Rise leading bingo games and serving up pancakes, coffee and juice to the residents. Ten Accenture employees took part in the day of fun and some volunteers even brought their children. In total, Accenture employees dedicated twenty volunteer hours, serving approximately thirty seniors
Accenture coordinator, Eric Barker, said of the project, “The clients at Pressley Street High Rise much appreciated the bingo games and breakfast that were coordinated for them. Even the little kids of the volunteers got into the act by calling the bingo numbers!”
PricewaterhouseCoopers Employees Kick-off 2009 Campaign
at Propel Charter School
On January 27, 2009, 11 volunteers from PricewaterhouseCoopers braved the winter weather to kick off their 2009 monthly employee volunteering campaign at Propel Charter School, HOMESTEAD. The volunteers from various departments at PWC, spent the morning playing literacy games and reading to the kindergarten and first grade classes. Each of the kids in the classes took home a book and a coloring book to continue their interest in reading and literacy!
The afternoon was spent working in the new school library, building more bookshelves, sorting a new donation of books and putting library card pockets and writing card catalog labels for 500 books! One volunteer commented that, “I liked having the opportunity to interact with the children as well as work on the library project. I think connecting people is really important in volunteerism so we see first-hand who can benefit from our efforts.” Thank you to PricewaterhouseCoopers, not only for the time that you gave, but also for the donation of bookshelves, library card pockets and tables for the kids in the library.
American Eagle Employees Celebrate Holidays From Around the World
Youth from three local nonprofits were rewarded for good behavior in a big way thanks to the American Eagle Outfitters Human Resources Department. 50 volunteers from as far away as New York City came to celebrate the holidays by being matched one-on-one with a local youth. Teams participated in holiday activities from around the world, such as making Kwanzaa mats and playing dreidel games.
Each of the volunteers brought a wrapped gift to give to “their” child at the end of the evening and American Eagle Outfitters donated beautiful scarves for each of the kids. The Human Resources Department made this activity the first stop of their holiday festivities. What a great way to celebrate! Thank you so much to American Eagle employees for donating a total of 100 service hours and over 50 scarves!
Accenture is Turrrrific!
On Wednesday, November 12, 2008, a very enthusiastic group from Accenture went to The Bradley Center to help the kids make “Hand Turkey” door decorations for Thanksgiving. The group played “Thanksgiving Bingo” and great prizes were given out to winners, including board games, books, and new winter apparel!
Twenty Accenture employees volunteered for a total of forty volunteer hours, serving approximately forty kids. Accenture coordinator, Robin Sampogna, said of the project, “Working with the Bradley Center always brings a smile to my face. The people who work there and the students who live there are nothing less than amazing.”
Overall, it seemed as if the Bradley Center staff and the professionals from Accenture enjoyed the event just as much as the kids!
The Crisis in Cuba Hits Close to Home for Local Alcoa Employee
When Alcoa employee Donna Busch chose to participate in a project at Global Links as a part of Alcoa’s annual Day of Service, she didn’t know that the medical supplies being prepared were being sent to Cuba. She picked the project merely because she believes in Global Links’ mission of environmental stewardship and improving health in developing countries. “I think it’s a wonderful idea to take goods that we are no longer using and ship them to people in need around the world. This project I am doing at Global Links is even more special now because of my connection,” said Busch.
Donna’s mother is Cuban and some of her family still lives there. So, when Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit Cuba, her heart broke, knowing that she would be unable to ship much needed supplies to her relatives because of strained relations between the U.S. and Cuba. So, Donna’s timing couldn’t have been better as Global Links is one of only a handful of U.S. organizations that holds a federal license to ship supplies to Cuba. Volunteers from Alcoa cleaned and painted IV poles, cleaned wheelchairs, walkers, head boards, hospital beds, and gurneys to be shipped to Cuba. And, though not directly, Donna felt like she was able to reach out to her family in Cuba and hopes that somehow, someday, they can meet again.

Best Buy West Mifflin Gives Back
Best Buy West Mifflin is making a huge impact in their community in 2008! Most recently, employees donated a complete Easter meal and Easter baskets to a family of five in need through the Rainbow Kitchen. Additional volunteers held a very special Easter party at Auberle’s shelter for children. The children enjoyed games, a craft, dying Easter Eggs, and of course, a plethora of candy! Since January, the team from Best Buy West Mifflin has performed nearly 50 hours of service, collected over 200 pounds of food for South Hill Interfaith Ministries’ food pantry and shared a Best Buy friends and family discount with the entire Pittsburgh Cares network. Best Buy West Mifflin is going full speed ahead with their commitment to service and hopes to complete three projects a month. |
