VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT : BUSINESS CARES
Sarah Shaffer
Sarah is a new volunteer to Pittsburgh Cares through our Business Cares program. She is motivated to volunteer because the simple truth is that one individual can really make a difference in the life of another, so that gives all of us the responsibility to actually go out and make that difference! If Sarah could live in one Pittsburgh building/landmark, she’d live in the Children’s Museum so her son could go wild painting and doing crafts and be constantly engaged. Her favorite quote is, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has," by Margaret Mead.
Bill Lonero
Bill has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares for about 4 years and learned about us through Alcoa’s Annual Day of Service. He loves volunteering at St. Michael’s Village, a program of Lutheran Service Society. There are many other agencies that Bill supports but the seniors have his heart! He is motivated to volunteer because of the smiles of the people, which remind him of when his mother smiled for even the littlest things. Bill says, “In a perfect world, there would be no hardships, poverty or disabilities. We would all be equal in class. There would be peace and love everywhere.”
Lisa Rondinelli
Lisa is also a new volunteer to Pittsburgh Cares through our Business Cares program. She recently enjoyed volunteering at Gwen's Girls because while working with a small number of girls, the volunteers were able to get to know them by engaging in conversation. Lisa’s favorite Pittsburgh restaurant is The Sonoma Grille because of their seafood options and likes living in Pittsburgh because of the carb-filled pierogies! If she could live in one Pittsburgh building/landmark, Lisa would live in Phipps Conservatory because she loves the plants from all over the world. The Chihuly glass makes Phipps even more beautiful!
Robin Garber
Robin first started volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares in the summer of 2006. Her favorite projects/agencies include the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Produce to People and projects that she has done with PA Cleanways. Robin is motivated to volunteer because she likes to feel that she is making a positive impact, however small, in our community by volunteering. Her favorite place to eat is Aladdin’s Eatery in the South Hills and would love to live somewhere along the edge of Mt. Washington – great view and a quick commute to work!
Jeff Gooderham
Jeff has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares since September 2007 and learned about us when asked to plan a Day of Caring event at his workplace. His favorite projects/agencies include Auberle, The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Marion Manor, which have given he and his family the opportunity to come in contact with the most wonderful people. The staff members, fellow volunteers and members of these organizations make all these projects his “favorites.” Jeff likes to eat at the Hot Dog Shop and vacation in Las Vegas!
Natasha Lightner
Natasha has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares for a year and learned about us through one of her volunteer group members who worked with Pittsburgh Cares throughout college. She is motivated to volunteer because she enjoys giving back to the community and motivating Highmark Finance employees to get engaged in volunteer opportunities to support Highmark’s initiatives of reaching out and helping our community as well as the personal fulfillment volunteering offers to the individual. Natasha’s favorite projects/agencies include the Humane Society, Western Conservancy and Pittsburgh Food Bank.
Dan Burfield
Dan has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares for over a year and he learned about us through his email at Alcoa. Dan enjoys all of his volunteer projects, but his favorite is the monthly Marvelous Mailers for the Pittsburgh Cares calendar! If he could live in one Pittsburgh building/landmark, he’d live in The Pennsylvanian because who wouldn't want to live in a train station? He is motivated to volunteer because of the satisfaction of helping people as others have selflessly helped him throughout his life. Plus I get to meet tons of different people!
Cindy Verlinich
Cindy works for BHP Billiton has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares since last year. She is motivated to volunteer because it is great to help people less fortunate and be able to show that there are people who care. Cindy likes living in Pittsburgh because it is a beautiful city with all of the seasons, great sports teams and friendly people! If she could live in one Pittsburgh building, she would live in The Cork Factory because it is a Historical Landmark with a beautiful view of the city, located on the water and she would love the ability to walk through the Strip District to buy fresh food.
Zach Malone
Zach began volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares when he helped to organize two volunteer events between UPMC’s International and Commercial Services Divisions. He really looks forward to working with the Community Human Services Corporation and their afterschool program in South Oakland every year. The kids are great and everyone has fun! Zach is motivated to volunteer motivates you to volunteer because he thinks we can learn a lot from the people we meet while volunteering and also learn a lot about yourself. He likes living in Pittsburgh because most people here have a good outlook on life!
Patrick Hesidence
Patrick started volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares when Highmark began working with us about a year and a half ago. Patrick is a new member of the Pittsburgh Cares Board of Directors and truly enjoyed his time with the Girl Scouts of Western PA (Trillium Council) where he spent ten years volunteering on their investments committee. He is motivated to volunteer because of his grandmother (who was the patriarch of their family) who always said the more you give of yourself, the more you receive. Patrick’s favorite vacation spot is South Beach, Miami at the Raleigh Hotel where he and his wife go every year to relax!
